How to Prepare for Your Workplace Drug & Alcohol Test

What to expect, how to prepare, and why it matters.

Being asked to complete a drug and alcohol test can feel stressful—even if you have nothing to worry about. Whether it’s for a new job, a random workplace screening, or a post-incident requirement, it helps to know what to expect.

At Canadian Occupational Wellness, we specialize in on-site drug and alcohol testing across Alberta. Our goal is to make the process simple, professional, and respectful, so employers can maintain safe job sites and workers feel supported every step of the way.

Why Workplaces Require Drug & Alcohol Testing

Drug and alcohol testing isn’t about catching people off guard, it’s about protecting safety. In safety-sensitive environments like construction sites, trucking companies, industrial plants, and oilfield operations, impairment can be dangerous, even deadly.

Employers have a responsibility to ensure that everyone on the job is fit for duty. Testing is often used for:

  • Pre-employment screening

  • Reasonable cause testing (e.g., after suspected impairment)

  • Post-incident testing

  • Random testing programs

  • Return-to-work or follow-up testing

These policies are especially common in industries governed by safety standards, insurance requirements, and legal regulations. By implementing regular testing, employers reduce risks, improve productivity, and show a clear commitment to workplace wellness.

Types of Tests Offered by Canadian Occupational Wellness

At Canadian Occupational Wellness, we provide both:

  • POCT (Point-of-Care Testing): Rapid testing with same-day results

  • Lab-Based Testing: Verified results processed within 1–5 business days

We typically use urine collection as the standard method, as it is widely accepted, non-invasive, and accurate.

Our standard 5-panel test covers a comprehensive list of substances. This testing panel meets the needs of employers across many industries, helping them uphold safety policies while being fair and compliant.

How to Prepare for Your Drug & Alcohol Test

Here are a few practical tips to help you prepare for your workplace drug and alcohol screening.

1. Bring Valid Photo ID

You’ll need to bring government-issued photo ID—such as a driver’s license, passport, or provincial ID card. Without it, we can’t proceed with the test.

2. Know Your Medications

Certain prescription and over-the-counter medications can affect test results. For example, some cold medications or ADHD prescriptions may trigger a positive for amphetamines. That’s why we always ask about any medications before the test begins.

If you’re taking a prescribed medication, be honest with the collector. If needed, a Medical Review Officer (MRO) will follow up confidentially to verify your prescription.

3. Avoid Poppy Seeds and Certain Foods

It’s rare, but poppy seeds and other foods with natural opiates can occasionally cause false positives. If you’re being tested soon, it’s best to avoid them just to be safe.

4. Stay Hydrated, But Don’t Overdo It

Drinking too much water before your test can dilute your urine, which may result in an inconclusive or invalid sample. That might mean repeating the test. Drink normally and avoid excessive fluid intake right before your appointment.

5. Arrive on Time

Testing is usually time-sensitive, especially for post-incident or reasonable cause testing. Be sure to show up on time and follow your supervisor’s instructions. If you’re unsure where to go or what time to arrive, check in with your workplace or contact us directly.

6. Be Honest and Ask Questions

Our team treats every client with discretion, professionalism, and zero judgment. If you’re unsure about the process, ask. We’re here to help. You have the right to understand your test and feel respected throughout the experience.

What to Expect During the Test

The testing process is quick and secure:

  • You’ll check in with one of our trained collectors.

  • You’ll be asked to empty your pockets and leave personal belongings outside the testing area.

  • A secure collection area will be provided.

  • You’ll receive a sealed urine collection container with instructions.

  • The sample is collected privately, and the collector performs a chain-of-custody procedure to ensure proper handling.

If you’re doing POCT, we can often provide a results card the same day. If it’s lab-based, results typically come back within 1–5 business days, depending on the complexity of the testing and if an MRO review is needed.

Confidentiality and Respect Are Always a Priority

At Canadian Occupational Wellness, we understand that drug and alcohol testing can feel intimidating. That’s why we’ve built a process that protects your privacy, dignity, and rights.

  • Results are only shared with authorized parties.

  • All information is kept confidential and secure.

  • You’ll be treated with respect, regardless of the outcome.
